The Ugly Duckling

August 12

| 7/5

On a lake somewhere not far away, a mother duck is sitting on her eggs. But one doesn’t look like the others; it’s a different shape, a brighter colour and is much, much bigger! What will happen when the egg hatches and what stories will hatch with it?

Join Above Bounds Theatre Collective as they explore one of the most loved Hans Christian Anderson stories using songs, shadow puppetry and a little of your input to tell this famous tale. Come along on the journey with our Ugly Duck; there’s sure to be gasps, laughs and a few surprises along the way.

The Ugly Duckling & Other Tales is the culmination of a research and development project led by Helen Bovey in collaboration with writer George Boundy and musician Emily Snee. The project is supported using public funding by The National Lottery through Arts Council England, with project partnership from Worboys Productions and the Bike Shed Theatre. In 2017, the Company were awarded the encoreinsure.com bursary for the Brighton Fringe.

“The Ugly Duckling is a family favourite and Above Bounds wound it into a beautiful, thoughtful production exploring the ideas of perception, identity and body image.” Exploring Exeter

“The best part so far, you really engaged with the children in a natural, enthusiastic way. I really enjoyed it and so did my daughter!” Audience, Unpacked Children’s Theatre Festival 2016

We had a fantastic time today watching The Ugly Duckling & Other Tales. Above Bounds Theatre Collective even let us have a play after the show. Go, you won’t regret it! Fox & Tootsie

‘Lovely play, lovely puppet. Can’t praise highly enough!’ Audience, Unpacked Festival 2016

It's been a long road since the Seagull Theatre's closure, prompting an impassioned response from the public. A campaign was begun in earnest to save the Seagull Theatre, known as the SOS (Save Our Seagull) campaign. Although the journey's not over yet, it's worth remembering how it all began.
