Written & Performed by James McDermott
Jimmy is sixteen, sexually confused and stuck in Sheringham. He’s screwed. Well he’s not actually: that’s the problem… When pop star Morrissey comes to London, Jimmy flees to the city to find his hero and himself. ‘Rubber Ring’ is a laugh-out-loud coming of age comedy about a Norfolk boy’s struggle with sexual and regional identity. In 2016 ‘Rubber Ring’ played to rave reviews at The Pleasance Islington and this year transfers to The Tristan Bates Theatre in London’s West End prior to a national tour.
★★★★★ “As funny as hell… There are few things I’ve enjoyed more than Rubber Ring” London City Nights
★★★★★ “McDermott is an emerging talent in total control of his craft… His comedy is unique” Boyz Magazine
★★★★ “A humorous look at rural England and the challenges facing LGBT teens who live far away from the big city. There are few plays I have seen that had audiences laughing so long and so regularly” Carns Theatre Passion
★★★★ “This solo performance is electrifying… a charming, witty and engaging piece of theatre that will amuse and arrest it’s audiences” Scatter Of Opinion
★★★★ “McDermott’s writing is sardonic, outrageous, hilarious and honest. An incredibly assured debut” Auditorium Magazine
★★★★ “A sensitively told tale of a young man finding his place in the world” West End Wilma
