Oliver Cromwell, Lowestoft and the Curfew Bell
July 28| £5
On 14th March, 1643 Lowestoft became involved in the early stages of the English Civil War. On that day Oliver Cromwell entered the town with upwards of 800 soldiers to arrest a number of Royalist sympathisers. This brief episode in the town’s history has now become but a footnote, however to the townsfolk of the day it was probably a frightening and eye-opening occasion. In this, the latest of his fascinating presentations, historian Ivan Bunn will explore this almost forgotten event. By looking at its cause, effect and aftermath and its links with the town’s historic “curfew bell,” Ivan will, in his own inimitable style, present the facts in words and pictures, using what few rare first and second hand accounts still remain. An evening not to be missed by anyone fascinated by the history of Lowestoft.
