Lowestoft at War
May 18| £5
Lowestoft at War – 75 years after Lowestoft’s most devastating air raid of World War Two, two local historians are joining forces to give a special presentation on behalf of Save Our Record Office (SORO) telling the story of the town’s wartime ordeal.
Lowestoft At War by Chris Brooks and Bob Collis will cover the different ways the war affected our town, evacuation, Naval operations and the inevitably tragic bombing raids, including the infamous “Waller’s raid” of 1942. Many well known buildings including a library, two churches and two schools were destroyed, most during a period of incessant raiding in 1941.
Lowestoft’s worst raid – and the second worst in terms of casualties – took place on 12 May 1943, when 24 German FW 190 fighter-bombers attacked at low level and without warning, causing widespread death and destruction. It passed into history as the “Focke-Wulf raid”.
The importance of commemorating such events and the manner in which local archives help history groups undertake this work with heritage plaques will be highlighted in the show.
An opportunity for those who were there to remember – and for those who came after, to learn.
