Accessibility Information

The Seagull is committed to providing access as widely as possible to our local community. This includes those with additional needs and those who require support to overcome barriers to participation or access.

The following measures are provided to support anyone who wishes to access our theatre.


Wheelchair Access

Our main auditorium and foyer have flat level access from the car park and should provide adequate access for a wheelchair user. The front doors are narrow, but both can be opened to allow entry if the chair is wide.

We have a single wheelchair space on the front row of the auditorium which can be purchased for most shows through the box office. You will need to phone the box office on 01502 589 726 between Monday and Friday from 11am to 3pm. Alternatively email info@theseagull.co.uk and someone will call you.

Unfortunately the nature of our old building is such that there is not wheelchair access to the upstairs studios. Wherever possible we ensure that events are held in the downstairs spaces, but from time to time there are events held upstairs where wheelchair access is not currently possible.
We do have plans to develop additional downstairs spaces and to install a lift, these plans are subject to successful fund raising efforts.

If there is a show which you wish to attend, but for which the wheelchair space has been already purchased, we can make alternative arrangements to ensure you can attend. Please email us on info@theseagull.co.uk or call 01502 589726


Toilet Facilities

Our main toilets are divided by gender. The toilet designated for those who identify as male, has level flat access and includes three urinals and one cubicle. There are also three sinks.

The toilet designated for those who identify as female, also has flat level access and includes three cubicles. Again three sinks are available.

There is a third accessible toilet which can be used by anyone with additional needs or who requires a private toilet space. This toilet is backstage and requires a member of staff to facilitate access. Please ask at the box office to obtain access to this toilet.


Changing Facilities

The accessible toilet includes a baby changing table which can be used for smaller children. The accessible toilet is spacious enough to facilitate most other changing needs and includes a sink and refuse bin


Accessible Performances

The Seagull is committed to providing accessible performances suitable for those with additional needs. These performances are “relaxed” in the sense that lights are kept on and there is no expectation of silence from the audience. In a relaxed performance there is the freedom to move around, leave and return, and generally express yourself. These are often suited to those with Autistic Spectrum conditions, those with dementia or those with hyperactivity conditions.

The Seagull hosts the majority of its events from other companies, and therefore is not always able to insist that accessible performances are available. However we have committed to ensuring that our Christmas show always includes an accessible performance. We also regularly seek to programme performers who are willing to include accessible performances and advertise these as such in our brochure.

If a particular event is not advertised as accessible, but you wish to find out whether the performance might be suitable for someone with additional needs of any kind, please contact us for further information.


Support for the Hearing Impaired

We regularly seek to programme performances which include closed captions or BSL interpretation. In each programme we aim in include at least one such event.

Please contact the box office to enquire about the upcoming events.


Familiarisation Visits

Some groups and individuals would benefit from understanding the nature and layout of our building before attending a performance. We are happy to support this. Upon request we can provide an individual or group familiarisation visit whereby the person or group will be able to look around the theatre and foyer, see where they will be sitting and where the location of the toilets. We can also then seek to answer any queries about individual needs.


Dietary Requirements and Allergies

The Seagull does not serve hot food and no food is prepared onsite. However the bar does sell a small range of confectionery and snacks.
THIS INCLUDES NUTS
Since the bar serves nuts, we are unable to guarantee a NUT FREE environment and those with severe allergies to nuts should be aware of the possibility of patrons eating nuts in both the foyer and the auditorium.
